Bio
Velvetine is the stage name of New York vocalist Diane Marlowe, writing early-1980s post-disco with the poise of a room full of session players. A syncopated electric bass carries the hook, muted rhythm guitar answers in clipped sixteenth-note chanks, and bright piano, restrained strings and short brass accents arrive only where the arrangement earns them. Conversational in the verses and stacked into an uplifting chorus, the records stay warm, dry and close to tape — sophisticated rather than nostalgic.
